Meet Stu Taylor: Cold Calling as a Craft, Not a Gift
Cold calling has a reputation problem. Ask most revenue reps how they feel about it and you will hear the same thing: some people are just born good at it, and everyone else is stuck winging it and hoping for the best.
Stu Taylor does not buy that, and he has built four new courses in the Revenue Training Gym to prove it.
Stu has spent his career coaching high performing sales teams and co-authoring “Problem Prospecting,” a bestselling guide to outbound prospecting that has helped thousands of reps rethink how they approach the phone. He is known for tough, direct coaching that still leaves people motivated to improve, and for turning what feels like instinct into something any rep can learn and repeat.
That is exactly what these four courses do. Instead of handing reps a script to memorize, Stu breaks cold calling down into a repeatable system built on his OPTICs framework, a guide rather than a script, so reps keep their own personality on the call while still following a structure that works.
What is in the Gym?
Course 1: Cold Call Formula
This course starts with the numbers. Stu walks reps through the calling formula behind consistent results: knowing your KPIs, understanding your volume, and controlling the controllables instead of the parts of a call you cannot influence. From there, he introduces the OPTICs framework itself and the 35 second opener he built by timing his own team’s calls and cutting the fat until only two things were left. That 35 second number is not arbitrary. It is the result of real trial and error, and reps will learn exactly why it works.
Course 2: Mindset for New SDRs
Before reps can execute a framework, they need the right headspace. Stu reframes what a cold call is actually for: sparking a conversation, not booking a meeting. This course covers his advice for reps who are new to the phone, including how to get comfortable being uncomfortable and how to ride the inevitable ups and downs of a sales role without losing momentum.
Course 3: Building Your Problem Statement
This is where Stu’s 35 second problem statement gets built out in full. He shows reps how to construct it around two problems, not one, framed as situation and impact. Most reps stop at situation. Stu explains why that is not enough, and introduces the “so what” test to check whether a problem statement will actually land or just describe a situation without giving the prospect a reason to care.
Course 4: Personalization vs. Relevance
The final course tackles a debate that comes up in every prospecting conversation: how personalized does an outreach approach really need to be? Stu makes the case that relevance and a tight, well matched list beat hyper-personalization every time. He also covers how to rework the same problem statement for different levels of seniority. A founder and a senior manager can feel the exact same problem in completely different ways, and reps need to know how to speak to both.
Why it matters
What makes Stu’s approach stand out is that it treats cold calling as a skill you build, not a talent you either have or you do not. Every course is built around something reps can practice and measure: a formula, a framework, a specific number of seconds, a test they can run on their own problem statement.
Reps who complete these courses will not just understand cold calling better. They will have a repeatable process they can run on every call.
As Stu puts it in his own words: reps do not have to be naturally gifted to be great on the phone. They just need to control the controllables, get comfortable being uncomfortable, and stay consistent with their activity numbers.
A Warm Welcome from SentientPro
Sam Fryer, Co-CEO of SentientPro, put it this way:
“Nobody walks into a gym and expects to lift heavy on day one. You warm up, you learn the form, you add weight once the reps are clean. Cold calling has always been treated like the opposite: sink or swim, figure it out on your own calls, and if you’re not naturally good at it, tough. Stu’s courses are the warm-up and the form work. They take something reps have been told is a talent and turn it into a rep, something you can actually train.”

Stu Taylor has spent two decades in sales, and he is upfront that most of it was spent learning the hard way. He is the sales trainer and coach behind Stu Taylor Sales, and co-author of “Problem Prospecting,” a bestselling guide to outbound prospecting that has become required reading for a lot of reps doing cold outreach.
What sets Stu apart is not a theory he read somewhere. It is a track record of coaching reps who went on to hit real numbers, paired with a coaching style people come back for. Rachel Haak, VP of Learning at SIA, has described his ability to give tough feedback while still leaving learners motivated to improve. Ryan Nuttall, a Senior BDR at DocuSign, has credited Stu’s mentorship as a key part of his move into an AE role.
Stu’s approach treats cold calling less like a talent and more like a system: numbers you track, a framework you follow, and habits you build on purpose. That is the same philosophy behind the four courses he has just brought into the SenPro Gym.
